It’s quiet, it doesn’t dent, it won’t rust, and it flexes to absorb impacts. Half-inch (12 mm) is the standard for hard use. The trade-off is it can wear down over years of grinding and it’s not as rigid as metal.
- Aluminum — Lighter than steel, corrosion-resistant, and it looks fantastic. Good for A-arm guards and belly pans where you want strength without steel’s weight. The downsides: it dents on sharp impacts and can catch on square-edged rock instead of sliding.
