A torn CV boot is the cheapest repair on a Can-Am and the most expensive one you can ignore. The boot itself is a rubber accordion that costs almost nothing. Its only job is keeping grease in and grit out of the constant-velocity joint — and the moment it splits, the countdown starts. Dirt and water go in, grease goes out, the bearings inside start grinding themselves down, and a repair that would have taken an afternoon turns into a new axle. On a Maverick X3, Defender, Outlander, or Commander that lives in mud, sand, and rock, this is one of the highest-value inspections you can do, and almost nobody does it until something clicks.

What a CV joint does, and why the boot is the whole story
Every drive axle on a Can-Am has to deliver power to the wheel while the suspension moves through its travel and the wheel steers. That means the shaft has to transmit torque through a changing angle without speeding up and slowing down through the rotation — which is exactly what a constant-velocity joint is for. Most axles have two: an outer joint near the wheel that handles the big steering angles, and an inner joint near the differential that handles suspension plunge.
Inside, that joint is a set of hardened bearings running in machined races, packed with heavy moly grease. It’s a precision assembly running under enormous load — and it is completely defenseless against contamination. That’s the boot’s entire purpose. The joint doesn’t wear out because it’s undersized; it wears out because the boot let it down.
How boots actually fail on a Can-Am
Boots don’t usually fail from age alone. They fail from something specific:
- Trail strike. A rock, root, or stump catches the boot directly. This is the number one cause on rocky and wooded trail, and it’s why CV guards exist. - Clamp failure. The band clamp at either end loosens, corrodes, or was never seated right after a previous repair. The boot slips off its seat and slings grease from the end instead of a split.
- Heat and angle. Steeper operating angles run the boot hotter and flex it harder. This is what puts lifted machines and big-tire builds on the shortlist.
- Age and mud abrasion. Years of grit-laden water blasting the accordion folds wears the rubber thin. The folds crack first.
- Pressure-washer damage. Blasting a hot boot at close range with a high-pressure wand can force water past the clamp or cut the rubber outright. Keep the wand off the boots.
The two-minute inspection that saves an axle
Do this every wash, and always after a hard rocky ride.
1. Look for slung grease. This is the tell that shows up before anything else. Spinning axles fling escaped grease outward in a distinctive dark, gritty arc — check the inside of the wheel, the A-arm, the inner fender, and the frame rail at each corner. Fresh grease spray at one corner means that boot is open.
2. Turn the wheel to full lock and look at the boot. Both ends and every accordion fold. You’re looking for splits, cracks between folds, a boot that’s ballooned or collapsed, and clamps that have moved. Do it at all four corners, and don’t skip the inner joints — they’re less visible and get inspected half as often.
3. Squeeze and rotate. With the boot cool, squeeze the folds gently. Hidden cracks tend to open under that flex. Rotate the shaft by hand and feel for notchiness.
4. Listen on the next ride. Clicking that appears on turns and gets louder at full lock is a worn outer joint. Vibration or a clunk under straight-line acceleration points to the inner joint or a bent shaft. Either sound means the inspection window has closed — you’re now buying a joint, not a boot.

Boot kit vs. rebuilt joint vs. complete axle
Three ways to fix it, and the honest case for each.
Boot kit — the early-catch repair
A boot, fresh grease, and new clamps. This is the right fix only when you caught the tear early: the joint still feels tight, there’s no clicking, no play, and no grinding when you rotate it by hand. The work that matters isn’t installing the boot — it’s completely cleaning the old contaminated grease out of the joint first. Pack a new boot over gritty grease and you’ve bought yourself a few months and a false sense of security. Done properly on a healthy joint, it’s the best-value repair on the machine.
Rebuilt or replacement joint
Replacing the joint assembly while keeping the shaft. Less common on UTVs than on cars because complete axles are widely available and often not much more expensive once you count labor. Worth a look if you have a good shaft and a specifically damaged outer joint.
Complete axle assembly — the default once damage starts
A new shaft with both joints and both boots, pre-greased and ready. Once a joint clicks, has play, or the boot has been open long enough to admit water, this is the answer. It’s also the pragmatic choice on a machine where you’re already in there — swapping the whole axle takes little more time than rebuilding one joint, and you leave with both joints and both boots fresh. For most owners, most of the time, this is what you’re buying.
Stock vs. heavy-duty aftermarket axles
If you’re already replacing an axle, this is the decision worth thinking about.
OEM Can-Am axles are engineered for the machine as it left the factory and are the correct default for a stock or near-stock rig. They fit right, the boot geometry is correct, and there’s no guesswork.
Heavy-duty aftermarket axles use larger-diameter shafts, beefier joints, and thicker boots. They earn their keep on:
- Lifted machines running steeper CV angles all the time
- Big, heavy tires — 30s and up — that multiply the torque the joint sees
- Mud and deep-water riders, where boot durability is the whole game
- Anyone who has already snapped a stock shaft
There’s a real trap at the cheap end. A no-name axle with soft metal, sloppy tolerances, and a thin boot is a downgrade sold as an upgrade — it fails sooner than the OEM part it replaced, usually somewhere inconvenient. Buy on brand reputation and confirmed fitment, not on being the lowest-priced listing.

Why lifts and big tires change the math
A lift kit changes the axle’s operating angle at ride height. Instead of running near-straight most of the time and only articulating at the extremes, a lifted machine’s CV joints work at a steeper angle constantly. Steeper angle means more internal friction, more heat, more boot flex — and a boot that flexes hard all day cracks sooner than one that doesn’t. Stack big, heavy tires on top and the joint is transmitting more torque through that steeper angle.
None of this is an argument against lifting a Can-Am. It’s an argument for inspecting boots more often once you have, running CV guards, and treating heavy-duty axles as a planned part of a tall, big-tire build rather than a surprise. - Maverick X3 — Long-travel suspension means big articulation angles and serious power going through the joints. Boot strikes are common at speed in rocky terrain, and lifted big-tire X3s are the classic heavy-duty-axle candidate.
- Outlander / Renegade — ATVs put the front CVs right where mud, brush, and stumps live. Deep-water riding is hard on boots, and the front boots are the ones owners find torn most often. This is the platform where the two-minute inspection pays off most.
- Defender — Work-machine duty means towing and hauling loads through the drivetrain for long stretches. Add loaded weight to a lift and the joints work harder than a spec sheet suggests. If you tow, read the towing accessories list with drivetrain load in mind.
- Commander — Trail-oriented and shares the general UTV pattern: rock strikes on the outers, mud abrasion on everything, inspect all four corners.

Don’t ride a clicking axle
The failure mode worth respecting: a CV joint that comes apart under load doesn’t fail politely. It can leave you stranded a long way from the truck, and a separated shaft flailing at speed can damage brake lines, boots on the other side of the joint, and body panels. Clicking is the joint telling you it’s on borrowed time. Limp it home gently, don’t send it, and fix it before the next ride.
